Does Illinois allow a medical exemption for window tint?
Yes — and in Illinois the exemption runs through your license plates. The tint subsections do not apply to a vehicle carrying the distinctive license plates or plate sticker issued by the Secretary of State under § 3-412(k), where the vehicle is owned and operated by, or used to transport a resident at the same address as, a person with a medical disease requiring shielding from the direct rays of the sun — the law names systemic or discoid lupus, disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis, light sensitivity from a traumatic brain injury, and albinism. You need a certified statement from a physician licensed in Illinois; the certification is carried in the vehicle at all times, is renewed every four years, and a copy goes to the Secretary of State. No exemption is granted for a condition that sunglasses or other eye protection can adequately handle, and an installer may only install the exempt treatment on a vehicle already carrying the plates or sticker.
What does legal tint cost in Illinois?
It turns on the vehicle, how much glass is being covered, and the film tier — dyed, carbon, and ceramic films price differently, and shops quote the finished job, not the film alone. The free 2026 Illinois Tint Law and Cost Guide by email (below) includes cost notes that explain what shops weigh, so a quote makes sense when you get one.
