Tint questions Lakeway drivers ask
What is the legal window tint in Texas?
On a passenger car — front side windows: 25%. Rear side windows: No restriction. Rear windshield: No restriction. Tint may cover only the top strip of the windshield — above the AS-1 line, or within five inches of the top if there is no AS-1 line — and that strip must let in at least 25% of light, reflect 25% or less, and may not be red, blue, or amber; clear, un-tinted UV film may cover the whole windshield.
Is 20% tint legal in Texas?
20% sits inside the figures for the rear side windows and rear windshield. It is darker than Texas allows on the front side windows.
Where can I get legal tint installed in Lakeway?
Lakeway has 1 window film shop listed on Film Slingers, ranked by rating, then by review count — nobody buys a position.
Does Texas allow a medical exemption for window tint?
Yes. It is a defense under § 547.613(e) when the driver or a passenger must be shielded from the direct rays of the sun for a medical reason. DPS no longer issues exemption certificates (that ended January 1, 2019) and charges no fee: the proof is a signed statement from a licensed physician or licensed optometrist naming the driver or occupant and stating that sunscreening devices are needed to safeguard that person's health, kept in the vehicle and shown to an officer at a stop. The law sets no expiration date for the statement.
What does legal tint cost in Texas?
It turns on the vehicle, how much glass is being covered, and the film tier — dyed, carbon, and ceramic films price differently, and shops quote the finished job, not the film alone. The free 2026 Texas Tint Law and Cost Guide by email (below) includes cost notes that explain what shops weigh, so a quote makes sense when you get one.

Texas ended its yearly safety inspection for most vehicles on January 1, 2025 — tint is now enforced at the stop, not at the inspection station. The full guide states the law in plain English — fines, medical exemptions, and the windshield rule included.
